Watchmen Characters

The Comedian

/We're society's only protection./
Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Edward Blake / The Comedian: A superhero who is commissioned by the U.S. government.
One of the most active vigilantes in the Watchmen universe, Edward Blake operated as the Comedian for decades, in addition to working for the U.S. government in Vietnam and elsewhere. Originally a jester-themed hero, he later took on a more militaristic outfit, in keeping with his violent solutions to most problems. He is by all appearances a cynical egotist using moralistic vigilantism as a cover for his sadistic tendencies.

Ozymandias

/A world at peace. There had to be sacrifice./
Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias: A retired superhero who has since made his identity public.
Adrian Veidt, acclaimed as "The World's Smartest Man," was inspired by the life of Alexander the Great to take on the costumed identity of Ozymandias. Having trained his body to athletic perfection, he operated for only a few years before retiring, revealing his secret identity publicly, and building a financial empire based around his past as a costumed hero. Determined to do true good in the world, he is one of the few vigilantes apparently free from psychological scars from his years fighting crime.

Nite Owl II

/We were supposed to make the world a better place./
Patrick Wilson as Daniel Dreiberg / Nite Owl II: A retired superhero with technological expertise
Inspired by the original Nite Owl from the hero team known as the Minutemen, Dan Dreiberg used his skills as an inventor to become the second, much more gadget-driven Nite Owl. Partnering with Rorschach, the two operated as a team, using Nite Owl's Owlship, a round, owl-themed craft named Archie, to quickly fly to the scene of the crime. Relatively even-keeled when compared to his fellow heroes, Dreiberg retired when costumed vigilantes were outlawed, and as the years passed he has fallen out of shape and been plagued by growing insecurities.

Rorschach

/This city is afraid of me. I've seen its true face./
Jackie Earle Haley as Walter Kovacs / Rorschach: A masked vigilante who continues his extralegal activities after they are outlawed.
Motivated by a traumatic childhood and an unwavering sense of right and wrong, Walter Kovacs became the costumed hero Rorschach, wearing a trench coat, a fedora, and a mask with a shifting, mirrored pattern of black shapes on a white background. Highly skilled in physical combat and able to turn almost anything to hand into a makeshift weapon, Rorschach worked as a team with the second Nite Owl until costumed vigilantes were outlawed. Nite Owl retired, but Rorschach refused to follow suit, operating illegally and becoming increasingly paranoid. His journal is the regular record of all of his activities and his increasingly misanthropic musings.

Silk Spectre II

/I am used to going out at 3am and doing shometing stupid./
Malin Åkerman as Laurie Juspeczyk / Silk Spectre II
Laurie Juspeczyk was pushed into adventuring by her mother Sally Jupiter, the original Silk Spectre. The youngest of the Watchmen, Laurie was haunted by ghosts from her mother's past, which complicated her own, limited activities as a vigilante. She became involved with Dr. Manhattan and quickly retired her Silk Spectre identity as costume vigilantes were outlawed, choosing to live with Dr. Manhattan at a private government institution. Their isolated lives together make her witness and captive to his increasingly inhuman eccentricities.

In that moment, she realizes that maybe Heck isn't the one for her. Of course, they will never know for sure unless they give it a shot. What follows is the romantic, humorous and sometimes poignant journey familiar to anyone who's ever been lucky (or unlucky) enough to be under love's spell.

Match Point

Match Point: Scarlett Johansson

Match Point

Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Emily Mortimer, Matthew Goode, Brian Cox, Penelope Wilton

A one-time tennis pro, Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) was used to falling just short in his life. But when he befriends Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode) and marries his sister, Chloe (Emily Mortimer), the doors are opened to the kind of money and success that Chris had once only dreamed of. Chris should have settled for happiness, but he is torn by his attraction to Tom’s impossibly beautiful and sensual fiance, Nola (Scarlett Johansson). The attraction turns to an obsession that forces Chris to make a critical choice. Now everything in his life hinges on if Chris falls short again…and whether or not his luck runs out.

“Match Point” is a drama about ambition and obsession, the seduction of wealth, and the often discordant relationship between love and sexual passion. Perhaps most importantly, however, the story reveals the huge part luck plays in the events of our lives, refuting the comforting misconception that more of life is under our control than really is.

Copying Beethoven

Copying Beethoven: Diane Kruger

Copying Beethoven

Cast: Diane Kruger, Ed Harris, Matthew Goode, Phyllida Law, Ralph Riach

Classical music aficionado or no, it's tough not to be moved by the soaring notes of Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The work stands as both a defining highpoint in the composer's career and a dynamic and beguiling legacy of its era. An imaginative exploration of Beethoven's life in his final days working on the Ninth, Copying Beethoven draws inspiration from the music itself. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, the film is both thrilling and romantic.

It is 1824. The composer, played brilliantly by Ed Harris, is racing to finish his new symphony. However, it has been years since his last success and he is plagued by deafness, loneliness and personal trauma. A copyist is urgently needed to help the composer finish in time for the scheduled first performance - otherwise the orchestra will have no music to play. Insightful young conservatory student and aspiring composer Anna Holtz (Diane Kruger) is recommended for the position. The mercurial Beethoven is skeptical that a woman might become involved in his masterpiece but slowly comes to trust in Anna's assistance and in the end becomes quite fond of her.

By the time the piece is performed - a moment in history captured in an exquisitely moving shot from Anna's perspective, as she sits on the orchestra floor helping the deaf Beethoven to keep time - her presence in his life is an absolute necessity. Her deep understanding of his work is such that she even corrects mistakes he has made, while her passionate personality opens a door into his proud, private world.

Harris is no stranger to bringing iconic, larger-than-life figures to the screen; his lead performance in Pollock was a masterful exploration of a tormented but talented artist. He channels a similar esprit here: his Beethoven is ribald and volatile, vulnerable and, ultimately, endearing. He is matched in intensity and skill by Kruger, who makes the young Anna both an enraptured apprentice and a paragon of willful female independence and ambition. These two characters break down barrier after barrier, and the result is a harmonious wonder.
