The Final Cut

Cast: Robin Williams, Mira Sorvino, James Caviezel, Mimi Kuzyk, Stephanie Romanov, Thom Bishops, Genevieve Buechner, Brendan Fletcher

Omar Naim's futuristic science-fiction story generates many mysterious, alluring, and thought-provoking questions about memory, surveillance, and the ethics of personal privacy. Set in the future, The Final Cut offers a vision of a world where soon-to-be parents agree to let doctors surgically implant memory chips into the brains of their unborn children. These memory chips are like video cameras with infinite tape stock that comprehensively record the lives of their hosts through the hosts' own eyes--for better or for worse. When a host dies, a "cutter"--played here by an eerily introspective Robin Williams--receives the memory chip footage from the deceased person's family in order to edit the memories for a palatable funereal screening, called a "rememory." But are memories public or private? Is it fair for a cutter to decide what comprises a host's life story? And do people behave differently knowing that someone will view their lives, even their most intimate and discreet moments, as a short film? The Final Cut's use of sharp and furtive handheld camera footage to depict the perspective of memory, set in contrast with the evenly measured cinematography of the rest of the film, constantly foregrounds the medium of film as memory-capturing and memory-making device. With an understated politic and a tightly wound narrative, this film delivers an open-minded and sophisticated meditation on ethics and technology, guilt and redemption, and the property rights of one's own cerebral cortex.

Cast: James Caviezel, Rhona Mitra, Andrea Roth, Frankie Faison, Colm Feore

Rennie Cray (Jim Caviezel) is the self-appointed avenger of his wife’s murder. For five years he’s been driving around the country in his 1968 Plymouth Barracuda, pursuing the man responsible for the hit-and-run murder of his wife, looking for retribution.

James Fargo (Colm Feore) is a mesmerizing and chilling killer whose body has been reduced to a combination of human parts, prosthetics, straps and harnesses. Creative retrofits have transformed his 1972 Cadillac Eldorado into an extension of his own body, a killing machine he uses to torture and taunt unsuspecting motorists on the highways of America.

Hounding Rennie at every turn is Macklin (Frankie Faison) a traffic investigator who recognizes that as Rennie’s search for Fargo narrows, so does his ability to distinguish between right and wrong.

Molly Poole (Rhona Mitra) has enough tragic personal baggage to fill the trunk of Rennie’s Barracuda. A simple drive home from choir practice spirals into an ordeal which puts Molly in Fargo’s sightlines. Marked by a photo he takes of her, Molly discovers she’s the only survivor of massive pileup he caused in a tunnel.

For Rennie, Molly has now become the bait to catch Fargo…

In an abandoned warehouse, a handful of men slowly regain consciousness, but they’ve been stricken with amnesia and have no idea who they are, where they are, or what has happened to them. All five seem to have been in some sort of serious scuffle; one is tied up (Joe Pantoliano), another has been handcuffed (Jeremy Sisto), a third has a broken nose (Greg Kinnear), and the other two have their share of scrapes and bruises (Jim Caviezel and Barry Pepper). As the men compare the tiny shards of memory they can pull from their minds, one finds a newspaper from two days before which features a front-page story about the kidnapping of a wealthy and well-known businessman. The men begin to suspect that they were involved with the kidnapping, but no one is sure if they’re on the right or wrong side of the law – or if one of them might happen to be the victim.
